You know when the word "addiction" is used, it is normally used in the negative or limited sense of the word. Usually when we think of the word, we get the feeling of something we can't live without, but we should be able to live without. That is what we focus on as coaches and counselors along with therapists, who do what many people term therapy, and yet there are some addictions that can be very useful to have. As My Grampa Vetter said, "I enjoy being addicted to breathing, and I enjoy being addicted to life."
THE STRUCTURE OF ADDICTIONS When we break down the structure of addictions, or break apart how they are formed, we notice two major aspects, the physical aspect and the mental/emotional aspect, often termed physiological and psychological. In every day terms we would call it our thinking part and our feeling part. Even though the mental/emotional piece, the thinking part says, "I can't live without this!" (of course, "this" can mean anything that is habit forming, from sex to heroin or money to love), the physical aspect, the feeling part is where most of our attention goes. Some attention is given to the mental/emotional aspect of addictions and more attention is given to the physical aspect and yet very little attention is given to the "aspect" that connects both the thinking - mental/emotional - and the feeling - physical - aspects together. It has been my experience with people, mostly clients and my personal circle of friends, that working with the aspect that connects the mental/emotional with the physical is an extremely useful way to proceed. This aspect surrounds, interpenetrates and holds the mental/emotional and the physical aspects together. We can call it energy. Another way to look at it is energy holds both the thinking and the feeling aspects in place. What we do is teach you drills that when you do them they give you skills that when applied can take the energy that holds an addiction and releases, or flows, the energy, therefore there is nothing holding your addictions in place.
