All relationships have a minimum of two components, your point of view and the others point of view. The dynamics of which view is more important (where the power sits) is always set by the frame. Yes boss-manager relationships depend on the frame because the locus of power shifts based on the frame dynamics. Even if you are subordinate to a boss or a manager there are times when the locus of power is in your hands, the ball is in your court so to speak. When a request is made of you to accomplish a task or your help is asked for, this is always a good time to be aware the focus of power is in your control. There are ways of communicating that allow your boss to happily realize your power supports them and adds to their power and the more they make your’ working relationship a win-win deal the less they have to worry about losing their power and position because you have attached their power and position to you, in their minds. One of the ways we teach people to do this is a simple process called the “Values System”. It is designed to find the deepest (usually unconscious), most motivating desires of your boss-manager and attach them to you, thus strengthening your boss-manager relationships.
1) Fulfill the desire 2) Leverage the desire Integrity comes into play here because if you can not do one of these two things and you give your boss/manager the idea you can it will be very messy and it will produce a lose-lose situation. These techniques are very, very powerful and when you use them you must be absolutely sure you know what and how you are using them or else it will cost you the relationship and more. The beautiful thing about using these techniques is that when you learn them you can use them with EVERY relationship to improve or make it better.
