Dealing With Guilt!

Dealing with Guilt and its brother and sister, shame and blame are the biggest stumbling blocks to achieve your potential in any area. Of all the emotions guilt is probably one of the biggest challenges facing humanity today.

The only other thing that is more important to deal with is Integrating and Aligning your primary original set of opposites (polarities).

Guilt is a powerful man-made emotion. People use it to control, direct and exert power over others and their behaviors. Guilt’s effect is short term and usually causes rebellion after extended use. It is a less than useful emotion and it does not move anyone closer to their goals.

The problem is because humans model each other so well we let others guilt us and we wind up quilting ourselves. Guilt creates resistance and resistance is what keeps you and me from getting whatever it is we say we want.

Dealing with guilt is one of the major ways to remove resistance and increase our sense of deservedness so we can enjoy the good feelings in our life instead of feeling guilty.

Instead of getting into more of the story of why let’s talk a little bit about how, because dealing with guilt is a basic skill that is not taught to us as individuals.

DEALING WITH GUILT!

Find It, Feel It, Measure It! Then apply a tool that will remove the feeling of resistance created by the guilt.

1) The first useful things we can do is recognize how guilt feels in our body. We do this by taking any emotion love, joy, guilt, anger, etc. and simply say the word slowly and notice where we feel the feeling in our body. (This is a great exercise to do will all emotions because it will give you more emotional control.)

2) Describe the body sensations of the emotion (i.e. for me the body sensations of guilt are a pressure of heaviness in my stomach and a pulling backwards around my shoulder or a hand on my chest keeping me from moving forward.)

3) Measure the intensity of the emotion -10 to 0. Zero there is no guilt and -10 would be paralyzing guilt. Determine the number that describes your current feeling state.
