Emotions - Everybody Has Them

But the last time I checked, not many have control over their own.

Emotions are an interesting subject. What are they and how can we use them to get what we want?

Definition:

I don't know if you've heard the definition, "energy-in-motion", but that can be a useful one to use from time to time. My Uncle Jerry says, "Emotions are what happens when illusion overlaps reality. Their purpose is to give us something we know is not real."

From a structural frame of reference we are dealing with nothing more than a body sensation (physical feeling) with a meaning we make up and attach to it. And usually, because of the locking together of the two, when we experience one little attention is paid to the physical sensation, and most of our attention is focused on the meaning we have attached.

An interesting aspect is that even though we experience them in present time, they are only created by past experiences or future hopes and dreams. Because of their nature and the speed with which we experience them, we think we are responding to what is happening outside of us, when in actuality we are responding to a meaning we applied somewhere in the past.

How they use us:

This isn't a bad thing if we are aware of what we are doing and know how to use them to get what we want in a way that is ok for everyone involved. But we often hear statements like:

  • "I don't know what came over me."
  • "I couldn't control myself."
  • "That makes me so mad I could . . ." (Fill in with your favorite word.)
  • "I can't believe I just did that."
  • "The devil made me do it." (An old personal favorite.)

Using the definition, energy-in-motion, it is understandable that every action we take has an emotional component to it, as the statements above so nicely demonstrate. So the question becomes, how can we use our them instead of letting them use us?

How to use them:

Learning tools and skills that allow us to get perspective on situations is one way. Learning ways to reduce or eliminate the charge created by the linking of the body sensation to the meaning is another. Learning ways to do both gives you great flexibility in any situation.
