The way we look at it depends upon the outcome we want and the frame we choose. If our outcome is to prove something, for example evolution, we use one set of criteria as proof. If creation is our outcome we use another set of criteria.
On the other hand if we are looking at our development as a way to achieve our potential we look at the information in a different way. Regardless of whether it is the development of spirit, mind or body there is one question, if pondered, that will contribute greatly to our development as a human. That question is: Examples:

The key is not to try and come up with an answer but to wonder, or ponder, "If I could. . . how would I?" The fascinating part of this is that this one little question can be used for any area you want to develop:
Human Development does not have to be complicated.
