Racism or Responsibility…" by Dr. Houston Vetter, Spiritual and Business Coaching Welcome to the 41st Power Thinking Newsletter from: www.achieve-your-potential.com http://achieve-your-potential.blogspot.com/
Racism or Responsibility…" --------------------------------------------- “It is not possible for you to constantly feel good about something and have it turn out badly, just as it is not possible for you to consistently feel bad about something and have it turn out well. So when you feel good, FEEL IT and then do it again.” My Grampa Vetter --------------------------------------------- Before we get to the main article on Disaster Relief this month I want to ask you to sign up for my RSS feed. I tell people RSS stands for Real Simply Sign-up and it give you control over what you read, when you read, and whether or not you want to keep reading. It also gets rid of spam. To read all about it, learn about it and to start using it to your advantage click on RSS/XML Information in the bar to the left It allows you notification any time a change has been made to Achieve Your Potential.com because we are always putting up new articles. Right now many people are feeling the pressure of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. People are in shock, both people in the affected area and many who are watching on TV. The interesting thing is one of the many and usually the main way people are trying to relieve the pressure is trying to assess “blame”. As many of the readers of Achieve Your Potential.com know “blame” is an attempt to control the future based on the past. It doesn’t work for the blamer or the blamed. I recently responded to an email using Disaster Relief as a way of accusing someone of racism because some statements (without a racist tone) were made about the disaster area. Here is the email I sent along with comments from someone from a spiritual organization. Someone wrote: This is a down- right racist post.... If you were a person of color making this statement it may be acceptable yet still an ignorant remark. Your misfortune (flooded house) in Texas could never match a lifetime of institutionalize racism most these have had to endure. Is being bored black, brown or poor cause or effect? My Response Let me put it in a way that may not come off as racist but leans more to responsibility... Is it blame or is it responsibility that is at stake here? In my book accusations of “Institutionalized racism” are simply code-speak for not taking responsibility. I had to endure WAY more institutional racism than anyone of color. Mine was economic institutional racism. I grew up and had to learn to exist in society coming from one of the highest racist backgrounds of anyone. There are NO, "0", national organizations set-up to put forth the cause and agenda of orphans. No one to give us money nationally, no one to get us privileges that other minorities can get, no one to help when we are discriminated against and on top of being a part of this un-noticed but greatly disadvantaged group I also happen to be white and god-forbid, a male also. So there is no way by looking at me that I am part of one of the most disadvantaged groups in America. I keep saying I'm a person of color. Isn't white a color also? As far as I know the history of orphans and orphanages are pretty bleak, poor and terrible stories and even though we had it worse than any other minority I know of no national group set up to right the wrongs done to us.Where the hell did I get the money to go to college? Where did I get the money to start my business? Where did I get money to rebuild after losing a quarter of a million dollars on a Real Estate project because of the where I live reneging on their word? Where did I get the quarter of a million in the 1st place? Contrary to some people's beliefs there wasn't a bunch of (hell there weren't any) old white guys hanging around willing to help me out and give me breaks. If there is racism in this country the only color is green. If you ain't got it you feel the racism. Believe me or not I had no one to turn to and no one to blame. It is only me and what I do that determines whether I am treated racially. Just like any other person that is discriminated against. I have the choice of being at cause or effect; I have the choice to be a victim or victor. So like any other person of color I used my own knowledge and experience to work smart and DO WHAT IS NECESSARY, without harm or anything else to others to get where I am. (Side note:) Why just the other night this white chick and this black chick were both racist to me. They only liked tall, dark and handsome guys. I fall in the handsome category but miss out on the tall and dark part. I guess I should scream racism because they wouldn't let me get my “Mack” on. They preferred other guys, how dare they be so racist. More on responsibility and the Hurricane on the Gulf Coast... I read about the devastation from the hurricane and I keep askingmyself "Why? What's the purpose? How could God have let this happen much less caused it to happen?" I cry every time I see the news or read an article about it. I understood 9/11. It was done by misguided people. It was a choice by humans, but I just don't understand these natural disasters. What do all of you think? Here is what we think…God had nothing to do with this... "We" did. Human suffering is of human creation. "Our" shortsightedness gets us into trouble all the time. Why? Because we all think we are separate from each other. We think that we are responsible only for our individual selves. The people who were struck hardest were the poor. Who is to blame for that? Is it the poor for not doing better, or is it the rich for not caring enough. In truth the rich and the poor are the same exact thing... people. Who is to blame for it?... We are. New Orleans is built in a hole in the ground next to several giant bodies of water... next to an ocean that spawns hurricanes. "We" know there is potential for disaster, yet who builds their houses right on the brink... We do. Money needed to beef up the dike system was retracted by the Government... Who is the Government? We are. Our environment is heating up, causing storms to hit record sizes and numbers every year. Who is responsible for our environment?... You got it! We do this to ourselves. We are not the victims of any outside force or entity. So, what can we do about it? We can CHANGE it. We have to change it, because no one else is going to do it for us. Anyone who says they haven't had a part in this, or any other tragedy that strikes humanity in any part of the world, is still dreaming. They are still dreaming that this world belongs to somebody else. It doesn't. It belongs to US. What can one person do, you ask? They can be an example. To Your Best,Doc Houston ------------------------------------------ Some of you know one of the things I do is work with a couple of non-profits here in Houston! One working with a Christian connection called "God's Strong Tower" building low income homes and another called Universal Gift of Life working on support for the underprivileged here in the Houston Gulf Coast Area. Both groups are getting request for help from the "Hurricane Katrina" disaster. I usually don't look for funds outside the Houston-Galveston Area and yet we are setting up a division called the "Gulf Coast Underprivileged Fund" to funnel money and building support to Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama residents. Right now we are getting funds to the displaced folks who are being turned away by the Astrodome because they weren't in the Superdome. Our non-profits are working with 100's of fire stations and churches that are not working with the Astrodome - Superdome-Red Cross connection. We are helping the ones that are sort of getting stuck in between government agencies. That are being turned away from the Astrodome. If you can help us thank you and if you would feel better contributing to the Red Cross Bless you. Either is appreciated. I usually only ask for donations from local businesses and community groups in and around Houston and yet because of the size of the disaster and the urgent need and suffering of others I am sending out this request for your consideration. This is a request please don't feel guilt if you can't participate. This is a request to those who can. We have set up two ways to participate.
